Inter Regional Track Championship Information from Team Manager Keith Atkinson:

Thank you to all riders who have submittted their expression of interest to represent the North East Region as part of the Inter Regional Track team at the 2017 British Cycling Inter Regional Track Championships (IRTC) taking place, 15th – 17th September at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

This year the team will be managed by Keith Atkinson and will be coached by Jack Rees.

The selection process has been carefully considered and some changes have been implemented for 2017. To assist riders and parents to fully understand, the selection process is detailed below:

Selection Process

The IRTC is open to both boys and girls born 2001 to 2004 inclusive (Youth A or B)

Riders must be a member of British Cycling and hold a valid BC racing licence

Riders must live in the North East region and ideally have track racing experience and track accreditation.

If you have not already submitted your expression of interest, the deadline has been extended to Friday 30th June, please forward it to, Sam Waugh, BCNE Secretary on: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

2017 Track Squad Training

All eligible riders who have expressed an interest in representing the region by the above date will be invited to join the 2017 North East Inter Regional Track Squad.

The purpose of creating a training squad is to develop a regional pool of talented riders, who will benefit from coaching and training in the lead up to the 2017 Inter Regional Track Championships and beyond.

The squad will be expected to attend key racing (track league), training and coaching events to be held at Middlesbrough Velodrome (dates will follow in due course). These events will involve educating riders on race strategy and tactics, advising further on the selection criteria and encouraging riders to perform at their best level at the selection events for 2017 and beyond.

Selection Panel

A selection panel has been set up comprising of Team Manager Keith Atkinson, Team Coach Jack Rees and last years Team Coach Chris Bush.  The final team selection process will be decided against transparent selection criteria. There are a number of months before the actual event so training within a squad will give riders a further opportunity to develop before selection is finalised.

The team shall consist of up to 4 girls and 4 boys; in addition, 1 girl and 1 boy will be selected as non-travelling reserves.  Please note that if the selection panel feel that there are insufficient riders meeting the selection criteria, a smaller team may be selected.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria will be applied at the following events:

  • Middlesbrough Track League starting May 24th
  • Regional Track Championships at MSV 11th June
  • British Youth Track Championships, Newport July 31st – August 4th
  • Track Regional Coaching Clusters commencing in August likely to be on a Friday evening, start date TBC

Selection Criteria

The selection panel will be looking for evidence of the following:

·  Attacking riding – riders with the ability to make repeated efforts.

·  Bike handling ability – rider ability to maintain position, ride in close contact and make use of the entire track

·  Final placings - riders with an ability to maximise their finish position

·  Tactical awareness

The selection panel will consider performances within each individual race, at the selection events shown above, in its own right - taking into account the above key selection criteria.  For clarity, overall results in an omnium will not necessarily be considered above the performances in the individual events raced.

With the use of the above criteria, the selection panel will select a team of riders that they feel have best demonstrated the essential qualities to be competitive at the IRTC taking into account the various different events that make up the programme.

The selection panel will also consider attitude, commitment, behaviour and discipline as well as the ability to work as part of a team when making final selections. Once the team has been selected, team members will be required to attend a minium of two team training sessions ahead of the competition.

IRT Championship Programme

The event programme for the IRTC is still to be confirmed by the organisers but based on previous years, may include the following mix of sprint and endurance events.  The overall result of IRTC will be based on the team result in each event.

·        Match sprint (Inc. 200m “flying” TT)

·        Keirin

·        Team Sprint

·        500m TT

·        Scratch

·        Points

·        Madison

·        Team Pursuit

·        Individual Pursuit

We look forward to developing a strong regional group, not just for the 2017 team, but to create foundations for sustained participation and success in the years ahead.
