BCNE Small grants

Each year British Cycling North East (BCNE) is able to offer financial assistance to BC affiliated organisations, subject to availability of funds, for the purpose of improving or increasing participation in cycling in the North East BC region. The amount of money available may vary from year to year depending on the surplus from the previous year but if funds permit, £1000 will be allocated each calendar year in individual grants of up to £200.

What can you use the money for?

There are no rules dictating what these grants can be used for save the general rule that the money should be used to improve or increase participation in cycling in the NE. This could be for anything from buying inner tubes for those who can’t afford them, to paying for 2-way radios, bibs, cones for leaders, or even some 2nd hand bikes for kids who wouldn’t otherwise have one. The main thing is to be clear in the application how the money will result in either more people cycling or people cycling more.

£200 grant awarded to West Denton Primary School

West Denton primary school applied for a grant to purchase a Hoy Bonaly 16-inch bike to help the youngest pupils learn to ride. They already had some 16inch bikes but they were heavy and had back pedal brakes which some of the kids found difficult to use. Club coach, Jocasta Williams said:

"We had borrowed some Hoy bikes from the BC Newcastle partnership Team and saw the benefits of the lighter and more user-friendly bikes with our reception and KS-1 pupils"

The British Cycling NE small grants committee were able to grant £200 to help this great cause. It ticked all the boxes for our grant scheme of improving participation in cycling in the North East.

"The British Cycling NE grant has enabled us to purchase 2 bikes. Our regular cycling sessions not only improves the children's physical health, it actually helps their ability to concentrate in the classroom, to listen and follow instructions" (Jocasta Williams, cycling coach, West Denton primary school)
